Abbey Ballroom, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal

In the late 1940's, work had begun on the hydroelectric power station at Ballyshannon which brought a swell of workers
and cash into the small town. It was during this period of a small economic boom that the Abbey Ballroom in Ballyshannon
first opened its doors on February
2nd, 1951 (see photo below). By the early 1960's, the Abbey was hosting everything from bingo to
boxing to drama, as well as regular dances.

The Abbey is one of the ballrooms (you can see the original ballroom to the left of the photo and behind the new facade)
that has survived the test of time and been revived as a vital part of the local arts community as the Abbey Centre.
Although showbands no longer tread the Abbey stage, music is still a major part of its contribution to the town.
