Oyster Ballroom, Dromkeen, Co. Limerick
Opened on
November 12, 1958, the Oyster Ballroom was described as the “largest ballroom
in the south."
Over the next two decades the ballroom hosted all the top showbands as well as
international stars like Jim Reeves.
Packie (PJ) Hayes was the proprietor of the Oyster which could hold up to 3,000
dancers and included a stage that could be wheeled
forwards and backwards depending on the size of the crowd. It closed in the
early 80's and became a furniture store.
In 2015, the Oyster burned to the ground (although it is still visible on Google
Earth-taken in 2011).
