Wonderland Ballroom, Bawnboy, Co. Cavan

At the young age of nineteen, Bernard McGovern, from Corlough, Co. Cavan left his native home to seek his fortune in the United States.
Many years later he returned having done well and set about making his dream of a top class ballroom a reality. The Wonderland
Ballroom in Bawnboy was opened on November 8th, 1956 to the sounds of the Flying Carltons. Dancing on the new sprung maple 3,000
square foot dance floor was from 8-12 pm on that Thursday night and the cost was 7/6. For over 40 years the hall hosted the biggest
and best of the Irish showbands. In 1973, the Wonderland was first put up for sale, although we are not sure if it sold. It was again
for sale in 2003 (see adverts below). We are pretty sure (based on newspaper adverts) that regular dancing in the Wonderland ceased
in the early 1980's and the last year we can find the ballroom hosting dancing was in 1995.
Today it functions as a sheep wool processing and storage center.
