Where Are They Now?
The Story
The first mention we have found of the Gaylords was in April 1961 in
a small advert saying the band were now accepting bookings via their
manager Eddie Duval. Many early adverts for the band said they were
from Belfast, which is about 18 miles from their actual hometown of
Lurgan, they were even reported as being from Ardee
in newspaper adverts. Throughout their history the
band were known as the "Gay Lords Showband," but also sometimes
advertised as the "Gaylords Showband."
Our
research found little else about the band except that their lead
vocalist was Don Murray who was referred to as "Ireland's Mario Lanza" and in adverts was called "The Voice."
The band appeared to have lasted a long time with
adverts appearing as late as 1973 for the band.
Robb Brown (brother of Dana)
was at one point their trumpet player.
The last advert we found for the
band (Don Murray and the Gay Lords) was 23rd of August 1978 in
Enniskillen. We're not sure if this was the band or just a group
formed by Don.
In the late 1970's a Belmullet
based band also used the name Gaylords Showband.
