Where Are They Now?
The Story

The Limerick-based Lucky Numbers made their debut in the
Oyster Ballroom, Dromkeen on Friday April 23, 1976. They were
initially managed by Seamus "Shay" Fyfe also of Limerick, but early 1977,
they were being managed by Noel Carty out of Dublin, who also
managed Brendan Shine and the
Magic Band. The original
line-up was Shay Fyfe (keyboards and band leader), Larry
Fyfe (drums) and Mike Sheehy (bass). The article (below) from early
1977 gave the band's lineup and included Mike's brother, John as the
"sound engineer." We mention this only because early photos of
the band were of a six piece, but only five musicians were mentioned
in the article. Another possibility (and the more likely) is that
one of the more unusual features of the band in the beginning was
that they used two drummers. In this case we think Doc Horan (who
would eventually join the Conquerors) was the second drummer as he
was part of the band photos early on. Early reports about the band often referred to them
as a "showband" as well.
As with all Noel Carty bands, they
would record on Play Records and
released their first single, a version of the Eagles' "Take It Easy"
in 1977. On the B-side was an original written by Seamus "Shay"
called "Round and Round." This would be one of the hallmarks of the
band's career as many of their singles and almost all their B-sides
were originals by Shay, still an oddity even then on the Irish
entertainment scene, although during the mid to late 70's more and
more "original" music was being created as recording studios became
more affordable to bands at a reasonable price.
