Comments: Well here we go! a blast from the past.  You need to update your facts regarding Dee Lee Julie and Starband.  Dee Mc Mahon was the original Julie,  she was replaced by Liz Allen a year after the band hit the road because she was pregnant.  Enter Liz Allen.  Liz was with the band for 2 years (not one year as noted).  Dee Mc Mahon was then brought back into the band and Liz was "let go".  The band broke up soon afterwards and Dee Lee reformed a new Starband along with Liz Allen.  They left for South Africa in 1982 and had great success there for several years.  Liz went on to join a very successful band (in South Africa) called Shiraz.  TODAY I AM LIVING IN SYDNEY and came accross your website.  Kind regards   LIZ BRADY (nee Allen)

Comments: Really enjoyed looking through this website.  As a young girl, I danced in  The Ballroom of Romance, Glenfarne & The Mayflower Ballroom, Drumshanbo, to all the great showbands.  I was a little disappointed that no pictures of the Mayflower are included but maybe someone out there may change all that. I would also like to pay my own tribute to a wonderful friend Tony Loughman, who sadly passed away after a brief illness on June 1st. He will be sorely missed by us and we are honoured to have known him. May he rest in peace. Good Luck with this website.

Would love to hear any stories from those days .Regards to all . Jim .

Comments: Wow!!! I have finally found a site about Dickie Rock & The Miami. Can't believe it?? I am from Worcester, UK, my mom was a friend of  Brendan and she loved the music by the showband, my memories of there music was my mother playing her one and only  album she had, i was about 9 or 10 1971??,  which i have now and have played many times!!, my mother sadly passed away at an early age 42, in 1976, and unfortunately only have vivid memories of her, but the one i have is  my mom singing to there music!!!,  My favourite was and still is "Every Step Of The Way ", "Come Back to Stay"  and "When You Cry." I am 46 now and still have a  lump in my throat when i sing it !!!, great i have shared my past with you , fantastic !!!, great site by the way

Comments: I met the Dixies in the mid 1960's when the were still named the Dixielanders.  They were playing at the City Center in New York City.  They were a fantastic group, and fun to be around.  Joe MacCarthy had the greatest sense of humor.  He is the person who got me started on drums.  We kept in touch for a while, writing letters and postcards.  When the group mentioned to my friends and me that they were going to change their names to "The Dixies" we didn't think that was a good idea.  (Were we wrong!)  To Americans, at that time, it sounded like it would have been the name of a black girls group.  Haven't heard much about them in the states since then, and just being curious, I "googled" the band, and Joe Mac and found a lot of information on them.  I was sorry to hear about Joe's son's accident and untimely death.  My heart goes out to him.  Joe was such a great guy.

I was only 10 years old when my dad died and I have wonderful memories of him. My mother and her family are always telling my sisters and me all the funny and nice stories about my dad. I am always reminded of my father everyday when i look at photos on the walls in my mam's house. I would love to see some more. I hope somebody will email me some stuff. Tracy McIntyre Clarges

Comments: What a terrific website. It is great to browse the site and learn about all the showbands of yesteryear. May I through your message board pay tribute to the late Tony Loughman who managed myself and Chris (Logue&McCool) after our success on R.T.E. Live at 3 way back in 1990. Tony sent us to Nashville to record our first album and organised our appearance at the Wembley Country Music Festival in 1991. Our career really took off thanks largely to his firm belief and dogged determination. He was a good man and we owe him a huge debt of thanks. May he rest in peace.

Comments: Hi Peter Jnr.,  My friend John Murphy called me today to tell me about your posting. What an amazing coincidence! While going through boxes of old photographs for my book last weekend, I found two pictures of The Greenshades. I was delighted to find them after so many years but now to have a contact for your Dad is just overwhelming. Peter "Hank" Jackson is one of the nicest people I ever had the pleasure of playing with. I have great memories of The Greenshades at The Prince of Wales pub, Harrow Road and at The 32 Club in London. I vividly remember many a very pleasant Sunday lunch with your family after we played in Shepherds Bush. Hank was the first person to give me a job when I went to London and I will never forget him for that. Michael and Tony Roe from Waterford were part of the line-up too so it was very much a "Sunny South East" of Ireland band. Please give your Dad my love and I'll email the photographs to you later today. All the best for now, Steve Travers.

Comments: Hi All, Great to see the site looking so well and well done to all invloved, it's a great source of memories to all the people who followed the showbands. I spent my early showband years  as lead guitarist with Jim Tobin and The Firehouse, George Kaye and The Real Country, Dermot Hegarty/Brian Harkin and The Plainsmen and finished up with 8 years with Mullingars Times Showband and unlike some people who spent their lives with the Showbands but fell it was 'cool' to later say they were Rubbish, I am proud to have been associated with The Showband Industery and acknowledge the huge numbers of great musicians it turned. I now run VeeBee Recording Studio in Mullingar and still meet many of the people from the Showband days and am glad to say that many of them are still very active on the music scene and are still recording. Keep this great site going as strong as it currently is. Vinny.

Comments: Great Site, It was good to read the back ground to some of these performers.  I often play guitar and trumpet for Shay O'Hara (former singer for Royal Blues) Shay is still singing up a storm here in Australia with his band Shay O'Hara and the Celtic All Stars, putting on shows in clubs around Sydney often a complete show with music, dancers and Shay's amazing ability to captivate an audience of any age. I will try an send you some photo's from current shows. Regards. Trevor Court

Comments: Hi, My father Peter (hank) Jackson, from Waterford lead and played in the London based band "The Green Shades" from around 1961-70. They had a long association with the 32 club, I believe. I wonder if anyone remembers them?  He also worked during that time at Abby Road studios. And has fond memories of working with the Beatles among others.
With the family he migrated to Australia in 1970. At a time when there was no real club or music scene. What a culture shock!  But I'm happy to say he has been playing music out here ever since. And was a few years ago awarded one of our top national citizens award for his lifetime musical work for charity. I've also carried on the tradition with my own bands. and now so have my teenage boys. Who are very proud of their Irish musical heritage.
In going home to Ireland a couple of years ago after 35 years away, I've become very interested in my fathers history. Only today when talking to a friend, who played the london and Irish band scenes much later during the 80's, did I realise that Steven Travers, from The Miami Showband, played as a very young bass player in my dads band for a while. As a young child I vividly remember the tall lanky softly spoken bass player with the long hair...He was very cool in the eyes of a young kid!
My dad's now 76, however we unfortunetly lost mum (Maureen Power of Fenor, Waterford) just last October after they went back for one final trip. After the years of a busy life of playing, he's now crippled and can't get around much. but the old bugger still does a few gigs!
If there's anyone who remembers him and would like to make contact through here, I'm sure he'd be thrilled.

Comments: Used to live in Enniskillen in the days of the Skyrockets (later to become the Rockets).  Used to travel around with them and yes, even answer their fan mail.   One of my great memories would be when I had joined the WRAF and the Eurovision Song Contest was on and there he was!!! Patrick McGeegan, hell! he won it that year...... what a buzz.   Remember the boys well, Cecil, Brendan O'Brien, Frankie O'Neil, Adrian (lead guitar), the McGandy twins, and a fleeting memory of a female joining the band, later to make the record Noreen Bawn.   Great band, great days!!!!!  Same days as Gene and the Gents.  (Surprised to see Henry McCullough doing guitar in Wings).  School mate David Quinn then ended up as guitarist with Leo Sayer.   Who says Enniskillen isn't a place where famous people come from!!!!  I went to live in England in 1966 and later came to live in Australia in 1976.   Now living in beautiful Tasmania .....  still love singing Irish songs in the pub!!! My name back then was Ann Robinson and my best mate was Maureen Day, affectionately known as the Longest Day and the Shortest Night. Great way to reminisce, where did all the years go.   Still feel the same age (in my mind at least).    Anyone who may remember me feel free to email. Best wishes, Ann.

PS  Was devastated when the Miami Showband were attacked. What a loss to the music world.  Hopefully, the boys are still playing in the bye and bye.

Comments: I sung with the dynamos showband from Wick Caithness and played at the Macushla ballroom in Glasgow. I remember on one occasion Joe Dolan and the drifters played there and I was totally blown away. I thought Joe was a fantastic singer and will never forget him singing Make me an Island. We were on stage when they had their break and when the gig was over I had my photograph taken with him in my dressing room. I still have that photograph and will treasure it all my life - it has special memories for me - those were the best days of my life. Does the band still do gigs? I have travelled around the world as far away as Australia but have never visited Ireland - I hope to rectify this in the very near future. My son David Jason studies classical music at Edinburgh Uni and is now starting to appreciate country and western music and is even singing it - the next bit of encouragement from me is to take him to Ireland to hear some of the best country and western bands -maybe we will be lucky enough to hear Joe Dolan and the drifters. The other bands we played with was Big Tom and the Mainliners and  the Indian showband.Thank you for some beautiful memories.

Comments: I'm the proud Grandson of W.A.Manahan's No 1 Band. {Billy Manahan's Band} Feis Ceol gold medalist Tenor (1918?). A chest full of his music is in my Dad's house. Billy Manahan's 16-17 piece Band rehersals were held in 10 Charlle Road Dublin 7 Phibsboro. Later I remember him warming up on the piano playing what I think was called 'The Bumble Bee'. My Grandmother was an opera singer. Catherine 'Kitty' Fagan Feis Ceol gold medalist Soprano (1918?). They married in 1919. She was a recording artist for Parlaphone UK. The family has her singing on a 78. Very musical family, my granmother's sister, Chris Fagan played Cello for RTE. {RESO} Aunt Annie Fagan, step sister, played Harp and was the first soloist on RTE January 1st 1926. An interesting foot note: Also sometimes called Billy Manahan's Orchestra. My Grandfather was the last to offically play 'God save the King' for the parting British Army in Dublin. Right afterwards the Irish Army asked him to play the Irish Amthem whereupon he replied 'we don't have one'. So the Bill Manahan Orchastra played O' Donnell Abu. Place:- Cathal Bruaga Barracks. Was known as, Portabello Barracks, Rathmines.

At least you don't have to suffer backing tracks diguised as musical talent. I started with The Monarchs (Belfast), toured Germany and made records in '63, came back home joined Jim Strain Showband (Ballynahinch), went to Silhouettes in Romano's then The Tara for a while before going into caberet club circut with bands in Trocadero, Talk of the Town, Tito's, Intercontinental,Trident  Bangor before hitting the road again with numerous bands. Always loved the Showband days playing all over Ireland and when possible staying overnight on Sundays in Dublin to take in The TV Club in Harcourt St. on Mondays and meet up with the other band guys for a beer. Love to hear from any of the old heads I knew.  Your web site is excellent. Regards, Roy Kane

Comments: You have a Photo of the Majestic Showband and invite anyone to provide the names of the musicians other than Pat Woods.  I played with 'The Majestic' for 2 years before leaving the band and Harold Bratten of Armagh was my replacement.  Tom Lenagh was our manager - a real gentleman and we played all the main venues throughout Ireland in the early 60s.  Unforgettable!!  I still play and have my own recording studio.
The majestic played a couple of reunion gigs in 1998 in Keadyand Crossmaglen.  It was great to get back with the boys and it was with great sadness that we all acknowledged what Brian O'Neil had brought to the band in our early years together.
