well , he was also in the music business. I remember so often the
dances in the Guildhall (Derry) and Borderland (Muff Co.
Donegal). I was delighted to find this site. I live in America ( 46
yrs now) but never forget Ireland and of course all the dances and
great fun I had, Hello to all of you,and God bless. Suzanne Mc

Comments: Trying to trace anyone
from monkey showband who can help me find demo recorded by my sister
Marie while she was singing with them in 1979. I know she was
only with them for short time and dident take it very serious which
was a great pity because singing was her life. Sadly Marie died very
sudden aged 47, im her next sister Bridget. I have the
memerory of her with the band because i went aLong to some of the
gigs with her when i was only 16. The band were fantastic it would
be great if someone still has the demo of Happy Hawii just for
sentimental reasons to the family.A memory I would like to
share with family. A broken hearted sister,
Bridget Carley. ( HYLAND)

Comments: Hello, I've just found
your website and many thanks to all concerned in its creation.
I grew up in the era of 1962 -68 when all those wonderful people
were trying (despite Saint Bob Geldof's crass remarks) to make a few
bob and produce great dance music. Unless you have danced to The
Cadets (with Eileen Reid) singing Da Do Ron Ron, The Altonaires, The
Miami (who started after Clem and the boys from The Lenanne Tennis
Club in Kimmage*("Kimmage !!) burned down, then you have not danced
!!. The Olympic (with the 'floating floor'), The Four Provinces
)later known, with more sophistication, as, "The Television Club",,
not to mention The Ierne". How nice to see a photo of Sean Fagan, my
cousin, who started his singing career in Gilbert and Sullivan
Operettas !!. Also Maisie McDaniel, who sang to me, as a young 'lad'
in the front room whilst awaiting the arrival onstage of the
inimitable Jim Reeves. Thanks again and keep up the good work!
Tony Murphy.

Comments: Great to see all these
names, brings back memories. Thanks for making this website. I
consider myself lucky to have seen a few of these greats. I've also
seen a few of them here in Florida, including Cahal Dunne, and Cahir
O'Doherty who owns a good Pub here. I've also seen Padraig Keane who
is the son of Sean Keane of the Chieftains, he is a chip off the old
block, and just as good on the fiddle. I also recently saw Brian
Dunphy who is about to tour the USA as one of "The High Kings" - he
is the son of Sean Dunphy who had a Showband. Watch out for the High
Kings - they will be a great success - the others are Finbarr
Clancy (son of Bobby Clancy) Martin Furey (son of Finbar Furey) and
Darren Holden.

Comments: I wish to extend full
sympathy to Joe's family. I met him and the drifters in 1970, What a
breath of fresh air they where, so natural and down to earth. We met
in the North East of England in 1970 in a club that had all the so
called world wide stars of the time as guests, but none so lovely as
Joe and the boys. I sat on reception and spent many a day listening
to Kiaran play " Bridge over Troubled Waters" on the keyboards,
please give him my love. Susan.

Comments: I thought your
site on Irish Showbands was brilliant If it were not for
the like of you folk who willingly give up your time to present this
Showcase for us all to peruse and reminisce. Then no doubt before
too long the whole era of the "showbands" would be forgotten
but as long as we have Websites like this it won,t happen.
Reading on here is like reading a history book and i thought i knew
all there was to know about showbands in and around Derry. Little
did i know i know absolutely nothing about them after being
enlightened on this brilliant site. Still i know a little bit
more now so i,ll take my hat off to you and say Thanks a lot.
Keep up the good work ! Before today i would have
struggled to name you 20 bands but to find out there was more than
700 well i,m very surprised! We all
knew the likes of The Royal ,The Miami, Johnny Quigley
Gay mac Intyre The Woodchoppers etc etc but to go on for
as many as is mentioned here, Never! As Clint
Eastwood would say "I,ll be back" back to the good old
sixties and the Showband era bye!!

Comments: Hi - just stumbled on
this site by accident while surfing....Best of Luck with it !!
Anyone remember the video for "I'm Gonna Get You" the hit single by
Reform in the '70's ? They were good. I was
in a school band which played support to them in City Hall Cork
around the time it went high in the Irish chart - maybe no. 1 ???
We learned the song a few days before the gig. They (Reform)
had one part in which the guitarist & bass player jumped in unison -
so when we played it, we did that too. They got a real kick
out of it ! Is there anywhere I could get a listen to
the song - or better still, see the video ? Anyone know
where they are now ?
Answer: Thanks for your message Brendan. Reform's
single actually reached number 12 in the Fall of 1973.

drummer with various bands, 70,s & 80,s 90,s, my wife however is who
I would like on your guest book. Known as Murphy, she fronted the
Swallows showband in the early 70s, with hits Ned Kelly, Don't Take
Advantage of Me, (1970 charts), and others. We married in 75, and
spent 15 years in London, playing the pubs and clubs as near as
possible so as to keep the day job going. We returned to Ireland in
1989 and settled in Turloughmore, Co. Galway, we still love to watch
what's left of the showband scene, and its always great to see
youngsters starting. We do not play publicly anymore but would love
to be part of your guest book, Margaret Murphy, (full name) from
Glenamaddy, Co. Galway is still the quiet unassuming girl I met all
those years ago, with hits and fronting the band, was also the bass
player, she took it all in her stride, as did all the greats of
those days, it was great to be part of it. Regards to all, Sean and
Margaret.

and not forgetting the Gresham Rooms. I feel so guilty not
remembering there names but had great times in their company and
there band photograph recalls the magic of the 50s/60s/70s. Hope
someone from Cork can recall the names and help me to say hi for old

Comments: during the 50's, the
Columba Gallagher band from Strabane had a great line up for a few
years. with Columba there was Johnny Crampsie probably the best alto
sax player in Ireland in that era alas now deceased. Columba
Gallagher himself on accordian {dec) Billy mc Anaw piano {dec.} Tony
Gallagher drums (dec.) The Four Macs vocal group and instruments of
these Tommy Mc Colgan has passed away and also Michael Mc. Daid
The two Mc devitte brothers are still with us as far asi know and
also Hughie Blee trumpet and guitar. During that time the four Mcs
harmony was a joy to listen to and also Tommy Mc colgans solo
vocals. Footnote: During the funeral of Tony Gallagher The Apex

Comments: What a wonderful
website. Just a short story about a wonderful, kind, humble, and
very generous man namely Michael Coppinger, the leader of the
brilliant Royal Showband.About a year ago my wife and I went to see
Brendan Bowyer in concert in Nenagh. This was the first time I had
seen him since the Royal split all those ago. There is only one word
to describe the concert , magnificent. After the show I spoke to
Brendan, asked him about the film THE ONE NIGHTERSthat was released
in the cinemas in the early sixties. He told me that it was never put
on video or dvd but said to contact Michael Coppinger in Waterford
and maybe he might know something.Idid this, wrote a letter and
forgot about it About a week later I had a phone call and to my
shock and delight it was Michael. What a lovely man.We spoke at
length about the Royal, about the music, about the times in the
sixties. He told me he had a copy of the film himself, that he would
make me a copy and send it to me.He did this and would not let me
pay him for it.I see at christmas in the shops THE ROYAL
SHOWBAND STORY on cd and with it the same film on dvd.I just hope
people get the same enjoyment from this as I got from this
film.Through your wonderful website I have come in contact with
another kind and generous man in Co.Cork Jonn Lynch who has a lot of
music from this era and who has kindly sent me showband music that I
could neverhave hoped to get. God bless John ,Michael Coppinger and
YOURSELF and thank you once again. Sincerely Brendan Carroll.

Comments: I've just found my
name on the web site, fantastic to show to my grandchildren etc,
I had a couple of years with various small bands b/4 joining
Chuckles and later Bill Ryan and Buckshot. Those were fantastic
years when I was young, travelling was the worst part, playing was
the best. Boy did we have some sessions b/4 and after gigs both in
Ireland and when on tour in England, If any one knows what happened
to any of those band members please let me know via the forum. This
was in the seventies and early eighties. I later did a residency in
Bridget Burkes of Old Bawn for almost 12 months, 6 nights a week, wow
was that good fun. There was Jimmy Storey on cordavox, Hughie
Hynes on Vocals, well almost, and Jimmy ??? on rythem and lead, I
forget his name now. Keep up the good work to all .

Comments: played in
ireland..tralee from age 14 to 19 1954 to 59. enjoyed playing with
orchestra and the beginning of showbands. Moved to Boston and played
from 57 to 87 with own band and had a ball. Really enjoy this site
as I remember playing in the state ballroom and the royal visiting
along with the capital, the big four and a lot of the best Irish
showbands. Mick Delahunty came but never played due to some foul-up
in work papers. The night before I left for Air Force basic training
in 1960 I really enjoyed the Clipper Carlton playing in the
Intercolonial hall in Boston. This was the last time I saw them.
They were great entertainers. I was the band leader in a club when
Dickie Rock and the Miami came to play in 1968 and we suggested they
record Simple Simon. In 1959 I was playing sax with the house band
in the state Ballroom and Dermot O'Brien was playing featured
numbers. I it was a snowy thursday nite with not a lot of dancers
and I suggested to Dermot that he try and sing. After an awful lot
of pushing he agreed to sing Galway Bay if I feed him the words line
by line. He was actually shaking like a leaf he was so
nervous......The rest is history and I never got my royalty checks.
An amazing talent he is sorely missed. Will you ever add audio
to the site of the recorded bands. Would'nt it be great to hear the
Clipper again. Thank you for hours and hours of enjoyment. A lot of
great entertainers have left us.

the Tony Hayes Quartet, the resident band in the Orchid Cabaret Club
for a number of years to 1971 before emigrating to the U.S. Johnny
Johnson was the compere and I know he now lives in Canada. Davy
Fletcher was bass, Jim Kelso was keyboards and last but not least
was the best drummer in the world, Geordie Wilkinson (RIP). We had a
lot of super talented guests like Marjorie Rey, the Recordites, Ina
Reid, Jimmie Kennedy, Bernie Small, Roger Whittaker, Salina Jones
and the list goes on and on. Anybody remember back then?

Comments: Wow, I've just found
this site, I played drums with the band for approx 9 months in
the late seventies, I can not remember the exact year as it was a
long time ago. It was the same time as The Cotton Mills Boys
won oppertunity knocks, They beat us for the live show, I will never
forgive them for that, They alway's took the p--- after that. I only
remember Johnny from Droheda, if my spelling is correct, Bill Ryan
of course, My good friend on base whom I forget his name now, We had
some heavy sessions b/4 and after gigs then, Probally the down fall
of me as was with a lot of musicans in that time, Too much driving
in a transit around the country and not enough sleep,BUT it was a
hell of a time. If any of that band are around now or someone knows
where they are or what happened I would be grateful. Regards to all
the old band. Tom Hudson (Editor's note: Tom's band was Buckshot)
