Comments: found your site and so
sad to learn of the passing of hughie trainor and shay of the
indians. i played bass in hughies band around '63 '64 and have
many unforgetable memories of that time. i first met shay
72-73 ish. i was in the warm up band. he and i had a great
love of mr. smirnof's vodka and in the late 70's early 80's in
the galtymore (me in the warm up band again) we renewed our toasts
to mr smirnof. shay was a lovely man. he will be missed.

Comments: I had the pleasure of
playing with Barry Lynch sometime in 1988 or 1989. We called the
band McTrigger (after a group I was in on casablanca
records-Trigger). We played throughout NYC and
surrounding suburbs. We both continue to play albiet few and far
between but I did manage to make it to Dungannon the last few years
and found myself playing with Barry (and sometimes family) until the
wee hours! Great site, keep it up.

Comments: Hi there, I have enjoyed looking at your web site,
I am the daughter of Jim of Connor of the Nevada showband and the
pictures of the "lads" during the years have brought back loads of
memories. The hair styles are the best if only Jim had half as
much hair as he did back them he would be doing well. Anyway, I was
wondering if it was possible to find out if the "Christmas Time in
Inishfree" single might be floating around out there (even to make a
copy of it). The younger generation can't get their head's
around the grand dad on stage with a bass guitar bit so any help
would be appreciated. If you don't mind please let me know if
you think you can help. Many thanks - Sandra

Comments: Hello from the
States! I'm a 46-year old Television Journalist based in Florida...
but back in the Summer of 1971, I was an 11-year old Yank visiting
his cousins in Roscommon. The Mainliners provided the
soundtrack to greatest time ever. Back in '71 - the family
farm was still a thatched-roof cottage in Lacken-Rahara. A
simple home; three-rooms, no phone, no running water, but
electricity and a radio... and of course - "The Mainliners."
I remember playing hide-and-seek with my cousins, running around the
rock-strewn fields of central Ireland, riding down the twisting
roads of Connemara... "Big Tom and The Boys" went with us
everywhere. "A Bunch of Violets", "BJ the DeeJay", "Dim Lights,
Thick smoke", "I'll do my own washin' and my own Cookin'";
these tunes and more run through my mind all the time. Whether
mowing my lawn... or playing with my children... through my
singing and whistling - the jaunty tunes of the Mainliners are now
becoming the soundtrack of MY kids' golden years. I'd just like to
thank the creator of this website... for bringing back such
wonderful memories.
Yours truly, Robbie Burns

number of bands and to make music which was his life. He tavelled

Stoned Cowboys played regularly around Belfast. It is with great
sadness that I can announce that sadly Paul died on November 14th
2006. His family have set up a web site which should enable people
to post photographs and share stories. The site is in its infancy,

Comments: Your site is fantastic
and it brings back a lot of memories to me but I can't understand
why some photos of Showbands are not on it. There must be a lot of
old photos in Cork lying around in houses. I have been living in
France a good few years and I'm still playing music over here. But
going back to yesterday, I played in a lot of groups in Cork city
and I played for years in The Arcadia Cork and the Majorca in
Crosshaven, by the way we were the " relief " band as they were
known then. We must have played before every Showband that existed
and we got to meet some big international stars as well. There were
a lot of photographers in the halls at that time so there must be an
unknown amount of photos lying around in homes all over the country.
I hope that some of the people and musicians in Cork remember me and
the good old days as well as I do. It's great for me to be able to
open. Up your site on Showbands over here in France you don't know
what it means to me, and as they say in Cork " Fair-play to ye "
brilliant work keep it up.Thank you Noêl

see your page, it brings back sooooooo many memories!!!!!! I heard
from my sister in Ireland that Sonny Knowles has not been too well
lately and was very sorry to hear that. I have been a fan of his for
as long as I can remember!!!! His records helped me so much
when i first came to live in England in 1970, I was so home sick!!
Keep up up the good work. Ann Lipscomb (from Ballyfermot).

Comments: Late of Gay McIntyre,
Johnny Quigley & the Green Angels. I have just been browsing through
some of your comments, & found an inquiry about myself, which I will
answer. I find it very interesting reading comments on different
bands, which were 'on the road' at the same time as myself. I shall
be 80 next month, but still playing, mostly in the Birmingham area,
A long time ago, over 30 years, I made a Solo Trumpet recording of
'The Black Rose' There is quite a long story about this as
iwas banned!! It was issued on the Outlet label OUT-028 I have
been trying to find copies of this for some time, but with no
success. If anyone knows where I can get copies, please e mails me.
I know that it has more recently been issued on a CD, as the only
instrumental offering among a host of Vocals, can anyone help there?
I will also try your free forum site. Early Christmas Greetings to
all the friends I made in Ireland, if anyone wishes to communicate,
feel free. All the Very Best, Roy Addinell.

that the "ninth" member was Aidan O'Neill, my father in law, who was
lead vocalist with the Plattermen until January 1964 ... appeared on
Ulster TV as lead singer and an operation left him deaf in one ear
so he had to leave "the business". However, because of the
Plattermen he met a lovely young girl from Tuam, Co Galway (my

still sounding like Jim Reeves.

old showbands in the early 70s, I often danced in the INF in
Omagh, the plattermen were my favourites. Rob Strong, well what can
one say about him,he is so talented. My daughter Theresa, thinks he
and his band are the tops,in fact he played at her wedding this
year, a great night altogether. On a recent visit up to Omagh (from
Cork where we live) I had the pleasure of meeting up with Ray Moore,
he played along with his brother at my cousins birthday party,we had
a great night. The showbands will never be forgotten and am
delighted to have found this site. In fact I am just about to go

My visit to your website brought back many happy memories of my
dancing exploits in ballrooms throughout Ireland between l962 and
l972. I took part earlier this year in a showband special on
Cork County Sound with Art Supple, Declan Ryan, Pat Lynch and Jerry
Lucey; it really was a night of nostalgia, reminisinces and good
music. I compiled the history of the Maurice Mulcahy Band - I
will forward it to anybody who is interested in receiving a copy.
Owen McAuliffe, a founder member of the Maurice Mulcahy Band in l953
was a member of extended Cork senior hurling panel which won three
All Irelands in a row in l952, l953 and l954. He was a member
of the group that travelled to New York in October l954. I
have a wonderful article on the musical and sporting expoits of Owen
McAuliffe. Joe Mulcahy is still alive and living in
Mitchelstown. My sincere congratulations on a very professional
website. I hope that Becky Millar, Hampshire University, USA
will mention it in her research on Irish Showbands.

there are two Roy Addinells in brass. He lived in Birmingham (I

Just a few lines about Johnny McEvoy he was from Banagher in County
Offaly and sang with another guy and they were known as the
Ramblers. 2 as far as I am aware he never played with the
Greenbeats as he was a folk singer and they were originally a beat
group the only connection is that Johnny lives in Dun Laoghaire area
and of course John Keogh and the Greenbeats are from Dun Laoghaire.
Johnny came to the fore when he recorded Mursheen Durkin and
he only added a band many years later.
Hope this is of help to your guest. regards Joe

Answer: Hi Ellen, thanks for stopping by the site.
As far as we know, Johnny has always been "solo" although
we aren't 100% sure. He started in
folk, moved to the showband/country scene with Gloria Smith in the
band and went to cabaret after the ballroom era went bust. We could
be mistaken so it might help to post a request on the Free Forums. Anyone

Wow what a great site, it brought back soooooooooooo many memories.
I used to own all of Shelly's records & tapes but lost them in a
fire in 1990. Since I too have moved to Upstate NY, but I fear I
will never get to hear them again. I would dearly love to get my
collection back. Any tips on where to buy them would be
brilliant. Keep the Showbands on the road. Mags, NY
Answer: Hi Mags, sorry to hear about your loss, your best bet to
post a request on our free forums! Thanks for stopping by and good
luck!

what i was looking for. I, too, love to sing and anything with

I was a regular performer at Midnight at the Grafton, The
Embankment, The Old Sheiling, The Castle Inn, Mac Keons of
Stoneybatter, are among some of the places that I used to play.
Introduced Paul Brady and Mick Moloney to traditional music and
often played with the MC Peaks, The Johnstons, The Dubliners, in
particular with Barney and my brother Sean (fiddle player with The
Chieftains).Left for the U.S.A. in `69 where I continue to promote
and play the old music all over the country. (Shay Healy should
remember me ). I was back in Dublin in `04 and played my own concert
at Liberty Hall with Paul Brady and a lot of old friends from the
60`s . Email me for details as the concert is available on RTE Ceili
House archives. Forty years hear in America and still cranking out
the `ol reels and jigs. Thank you one and all.

in the 80's (founder Stephen Travers plays with Johnny Fean these
days) and Brush is still on the road!

Hi there. I have just come back from my uncle's laying to rest. He
was Paddy Landy, drummer with the Graduates in the 60s early 70s.
It's a very sad day for my mother (his sister). I wonder do you have
any photos of them in there hayday in Skerries. It would be a nice
thing to give to her. Thanks, Eoghan.
Answer: Please accept our condolences on Paddy's
sad passing. Although we have no photos we can send you, we do have
one of the Graduates on the website.
Follow this link to see it.

Great site. Big fan of Horslips. Saw them a few times in
the late 70s. One of those bands that sounded much better live.
Hope they come back to the US if they reform.
Answer: With the band back working on a new
project, who knows when a tour might be in the offering!

Hello, I am enjoying your web site. I played for many years at
City Center Ballroom on West 55 th. St. in New York City. I
met so many musicians from the showband era. Also worked the
State Ballroom in Boston, Keyman's Club, Chicago, Carousel, San
Francisco just to name a few of the many Bill Fuller venues, plus
the Buffalo, London, Carousel, Manchester. I am still playing the
concert circuit, but mostly in Florida where many of our dancers are
now retired. People such as Red Hurley, John Trotter, Joe Cuddy,
Sonny Knowles all from that great showband time come over to join us
for our shows. Nice to make contact with you, Paddy.

I just happened to see Eddie Masterson's name pop up in one of your
site's articles. He was a person I really liked to talk to during my
years with the Royal. He was never critical and always courteous. A
real genuine guy and talented also.
