Aughnacloy Carnival, Co. Tyrone
It would appear from archival research that
the Aughnacloy Carnival ran for three years in the mid 1960's, from 1964-66.
Like so many of the carnivals from that period it was run to provide "parochial
funding." It was held over a two week period
and featured dancing almost every night. Having researched so many carnivals
which took place in the Republic of Ireland,
what was interesting about this Northern Ireland (Tyrone is one of the six
counties which makes up the North)
event was that dancing was allowed on Saturdays, whereas in the
rural Ireland (where most carnivals were held)
Saturday dancing would not be politically correct in some areas until well into
the 1970's.
