Carraroe Carnival, Co. Sligo
The carnival in the village of Carraroe,
just outside Sligo town, made its debut in June, 1962 and was run "in aid of
Carraroe
Church Renovation Fund." The dance line-up appears to have been pretty standard
for the times with dances every night and
two on Sunday (except, and of course, on Saturday night). Another interesting
discovery we made was
you could by a "season ticket" (which we assume was good for all the dance for
30/- shillings (or £1 1/2 and about 25%
off).
It would appear this carnival was a once off as we can find no sign of it again
until 1972 when the village at its first "Pop
Carnival."
From what we can find in the archives, it would appear the carnival took a
couple years of to return once more in
1975 as the Carraroe Carnival which featured all types of music. This seems to
have been the last one.
