Culleens Carnival, Co. Sligo
The Culleens Carnival appears to have
started in 1968 and was run in aid of the Kilglass Church Building Fund. The
village is located on the main Sligo-Ballina Road, not far from the town of
Dromore West. The following year
it was advertised as the Carnival of Dancing. One of the interesting things
about all the carnivals which you can see below is the
provision of a bus service from the major towns of Ballina and Sligo (which was
44 km - 27 miles away). The
carnival ran from the last week in May through mid June every year through 1986.
By the time the last carnival was held,
it was called the Culleens Summer Festival and most of the bands featured were
local acts from Sligo and Mayo.
For 19 years, the Culleens Carnival brought top class entertainment to a small
village in western County Sligo.
