Curry Carnival, Co. Sligo
The Curry Carnival started in 1950 in an
effort to raise money for the Church Renovation Fund in the local parish
(as many carnivals did in those days). The village, which lies about midway
between Tubbercurry and Charlestown in Co. Mayo
was the typical site for a carnival with a 4,000 sq ft marquee being hired for
the duration. Although we can't be 100% sure,
we think the carnival ran more or less continuously until 1973 when we found the
last advert and was called the
Curry Big Band Carnival. However, it also appears the carnival was resurrected
as a one day event in the
2000's to once again aid with the renovation of the church.
