Mullaghroe Carnival, Co. Sligo
Started in 1961, the Mullaghroe Carnival was
typical of the early carnivals around the country lasting ten days with
dancing held on seven of the ten nights. In subsequent years, the carnival was
expanded to two full weeks with between
seven to nine dances. From our newspaper archives research it look like 1965
would be the fifth and last
carnival held at Mullaghroe. A couple of the more interesting things we found is
that "hackney" (taxi) drivers were allowed into the
dances for free and also a train service left Sligo at 7:20 pm and returned from
Kilfree Junction (near the
marquee site) at 1:30 am.
