Mullinabreena Carnival, Co. Sligo
Started in 1956, the Mullinabreena Carnival
was located across from the Achonry Creamery on the main Sligo-Tubbercurry Road.
It started as an eight day carnival with dancing six of the eight nights (no
dancing allowed on Saturdays). For the next seven years
the carnival was like clockwork, same location, same length, but in 1962 it
expanded to a two week event. That year it was advertised
as the Eighth Annual Carnival but it was actually only the seventh.
Unfortunately, that appears to be the last time the
original carnival was held. In 1974, there was a carnival run by the
Mullinabreena GAA Club
but it was held in September and beside the Woodside Inn which is several miles
closer to Sligo than the original
Achonry Creamery location.
