Arcadia Ballroom, Cahir, Co. Tipperary
The Arcadia Ballroom in Cahir opened on Friday, November 13th, 1963. It
was a joint venture between ballroom owners Donie Collins of
Askeaton, Co. Limerick and Con Hynes of Portumna, Co. Galway. Both were owners
of other ballrooms as well. The ballroom was of a relatively
large at 7,500 sq. ft with a 4,500 sq ft dance floor. Of course the band for the
opening night was none other than Donnie Collins and his Band.
Following its opening, and for nearly a decade, the Arcadia would host the
biggest bands in the country. It was part of the Associated
Ballrooms group, arguably the most powerful in the country so all the band
played there. The last dance we can find advertised
for the Arcadia was on Sunday, November 12th, 1972 with music by Hugo Duncan and
the Tallmen. We can't find any mention of the
ballroom after that.
