Arcadia Ballroom, Bray
Alec Corscadden and his wife Mamie who the
Arcadia Ballroom in Bray, Co. Wicklow during the 1940s and 1950s. It was
one of the premier ballrooms of the Irish showband era, large enough to
accommodate 5,000 on the dance floor. It
was "destroyed" by a fire in late 1962 or early 1963 and was closed for a time.
It was rebuilt, but finally closed its doors in the 1970's.
In the intervening years it served as a Cash and Carry,
but it stood empty and derelict for years. In July, 2019, the ballroom was torn down
to make
way for the development of a new apartment block containing 73 residential
units, three retail units and an office block.
See photo below of demolition taking place in July, 2019.
