Arundel Ballroom, Waterford, Co. Waterford
Although
short lived, the Arundel Ballroom was opened on October 7, 1955 in the heart of
Waterford City at Arundel Square.
Built at a cost of £25,000,
Jack Barrett (RIP) and his band were hired as the resident band and provided
music six nights a week when the
ballroom opened. From 1955 until 1961 the ballroom was a hub of activity hosting
everything from showbands to opera
festivals to fashion shows. Dances were being held right up to September 1961,
but in November the hall was purchased by the
Irish Rubber Company who turned it into a factory for the manufacture of tires
after their factory burned
down. Later the building was
purchased by Roches stores who panned a major retail development but then sold
it after being unable to acquire an adjacent property
and it was turned into a billiards hall. It is now part of the Waterford City
Shopping Centre.
