Astor Ballroom, Castleisland, Co. Kerry
The first mention we can find of the Astor
Ballroom in Castleisland, Co.
Kerry was in 1949. We think the venue had
been used mainly for local dramas and as a cinema for a short time prior to this
but in 1949 we found a few adverts for dances.
During the early 1950's the ballroom ran dances featuring bands like Mick
Delahunty, Billy Touhy and Billy Kenrick among
others. By 1954 they were running weekly dances for much of the year and
throughout the 1906's and into the 1970's they featured
all the biggest showbands of the era. Niall Power wrote us in 2018 to tell us he
was playing there on New Year's Eve with Las Vegas
in 1975 when part of the balcony collapsed during the national anthem. By 1984,
the ballroom had closed (as so many others
had) and in late 1990 it was taken over by Conroy's Furniture who are still
located there today.
Still in use today, it is one of the dozens of ballrooms that continue serve
other purposes. Two photos, one highlights the
front facade and the other, the side and depth of the building.
