Athenaeum Ballroom, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford
The Athenaeum was built in the late 1892
as a town hall/theatre for the town of Enniscorthy. As a building, it has been
an
important part of local history for well over 100 years, including
playing a role in the 1916 uprising. During the showband era, it hosted dances
on a regular basis as well as drama festivals, exhibitions, and every other type
of function. Although it has not been a regular ballroom
in the classic sense, it is still a part of the showband era story. In 2004, the
Athenaeum lost it fire license and closed. Recently, it has been
refurbished and reopened, starting a new era of entertainment for the town. (3
