Barrowland Ballroom, New Ross, Co. Wexford
The
Barrowland was the 14th (and we think the last) last of the Reynolds Brothers'
"land" ballrooms. It was opened on December 14th, 1967.
(photo below) The ballroom was apparently jointly owned by Jim Reynolds and P.J.
Doyle. It was a great success and packed in dancers from
across the Southeast. The ballroom boasted all the normal luxuries of the day
like carpeting and ample cloakroom facilities,
but added the new idea of thermostatic controlled heating and air conditioning
(according to reports at the time).
In July, 1974, P.J. Doyle took over sole ownership of the ballroom. Trying to
find out when the ballroom closed
has been difficult as wee have read that it closed in the 70's but we have seen
adverts for dances into 1990. In 2000, an alcoholic
beverage license was being pursued on behalf of the premises. Today, it stands
empty and for sale.
