Las Vegas Ballroom, Sligo, Co. Sligo
On the 4th of July, 1961, bulldozers moved
into a field in Finisklin, Sligo to start building Con Hynes' new ballroom in
Sligo.
Six months later, on January 12th, 1962, the Las Vegas ballroom opened its doors
to dancers and was an immediate success. The
first night featured a double bill with Hedley Ward and his Orchestra flown in
from Britain, along with
the local Clefonaires
Showband. The ballroom was large, boasting a 4,500 sq ft dance floor
The biggest bands of the day played in the ballroom for the next 3 years. On
April 21st, 1965, the ballroom
was taken over by Associated Ballrooms and its name was changed to the Montrose.
The Royal Blues played the opening night.
The ballroom would continue to operate for just over a year when in May of 1966
it was sold for
commercial development.
Over the following year, it became home to the Sligo Boxing Club. For the last
50 plus years it has been
home to several businesses
including Cahill-Maye Roberts, The Sligo Champion newspaper and most recently, Sligo Office Supplies.
