Seapoint Ballroom, Salthill, Galway
Noel Finan opened the doors of his new
Seapoint Ballroom on July 17th, 1949. Built in just over a year, the modern
ballroom included
on the ground floor a restaurant of approximately 4,000 square feet. When fitted
with 90 tables, it provided accommodation for 350 diners.
There were four small shops in the front of the building which sold ice cream,
sweets, etc. The ballroom was situated on
the upper level had a floor area of 5,200 square feet which would accommodate
over 2,000 dancers. Any band that played
the famed venue will remember humping their gear up steel steps on the outside
of the building in the early days.
Surrounding the floor was a balcony with seating for a few hundred people. The
ballroom finally closed in 1985. It is still used for live gigs
from time to time.
