Silver Slipper Ballroom, Strandhill, Co. Sligo

Opening on April 22, 1960, the "Silver Slipper Room" earliest history was rocky at best. Owner of the Baymount Hotel, Sean Byrne,
had been running marquee dances in the past and wanted to build a larger ballroom to accommodate Strandhill's growing summer
tourist population. The existing "Plaza Ballroom" was a small building that could hold, at most 500 people, and Sean felt there was
a much great potential as Strandhill's seaside resort reputation continued to grow. In 1960, he built a "function room" onto his small hotel
which was capable of holding thousands of dancers and despite several failed attempts to get a dance license he finally got a license,
and the rest (as they say) is history. The building to the left was the Baymount Hotel, opened by Sean Byrne's parent in the 1920's. The
ballroom opened its doors to the sounds of Mick Delahunty and His Band. Over the next 22 years, the ballroom hosted the biggest
names on both the Irish and international scene including Joe Dolan, Acker Bilk, Joe Loss, Rory Gallagher, Eric Clapton, Bill
Hayley and too many more to mention. On July 7th, 1976, Sean made an unprecedented move when he opened another ballroom,
called the Baymount Entertainment Centre attached to the Silver Slipper. An immediate success, the new ballroom was more modern
and about the same size as the original Silver Slipper. Despite this success, in 1981, he announced he was selling the complex and it
it would appear in papers for quite a while with a renewed effort to sell it in 1984 by public auction. However, it would not sell until 1991.
In 1991 the Silver Slipper and Baymount were bought by consortium with talk of them spending €1 million to
totally renovate the complex. As is usually the case with "developers," this never happened.
It was all torn down in 1997 to make way for housing.
