Silver Slipper Ballroom, Kenmare
The Silver Slipper in Kenmare opened its
doors to the sounds of the Monarchs Showband and Maisie McDaniel and the
Fendermen
on May 14th, 1964. Built on the site of the old butter market in the center of
town by the O'Connor Family, Mr and Mrs Pat O'Connor
and their son, Michael who would also manage the ballroom. It featured two
mineral bars and a balcony that could accommodate
150 patrons and also featured a 3,600 square foot dance floor. Throughout the
60's and into the 1970's the hall hosted some of the biggest
names on the showband scene and as the 1980's came around, the signs of age
began to show (see the photo below taken in 1982).
Finally in 1985, the ballroom closed its doors after 21 years as the hub for
entertainment in Kenmare. Almost immediately the ballroom was
purchased for around 60,000 and became a cash and carry with its maple floor
replaced by concrete as an era came to an end.
