Star Ballroom, Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan
The Star Ballroom opened its doors for the
first time on February 11th, 1949 long before the era of the showbands in the
late
1950's. The first band to appear was Ralph Sylvester and his band. Like most of
the halls built in the 1930's and 1940's
the hall served the dual purpose of both dance hall and cinema. The main man
behind the ballroom was
J.J. Clancy and it not only hosted dances, but also socials, meetings, auctions,
drama and all manner of local events.
All the biggest bands played the Star during the 1960's which eventually was
revamped on its 21st birthday in 1970
when son Paddy took over managing the ballroom and the ballroom was relaunched
as the New Star Ballroom with the
Smokey Mountain Ramblers. In
the late 1980's the hall was sold and became a furniture store which is still is
today.
