St. Patrick's Hall, Dunmanway, Co. Cork
As far as we can tell, St. Patrick's Hall
was originally built around 1892 and was known as the "Town Hall" for most of
the first ten
years. Between August and December, 1897, we think the hall was renamed St.
Patrick's Town Hall but references to simply the "Town Hall "
continued for several years. It was a typical Catholic parish hall, the likes of which
dotted the countryside of Ireland throughout the
early 20th century. In early days
they were used for church seminars, sports team and civic meetings, bingo and Ceili's,
but following the growth of the showband era, they
were perfectly placed to book even the biggest bands
into the small town and villages across Ireland. Like so many, the hall still
stands, but is no longer hosting dancing.
