Friends Showband Front: Sandy Metcalfe (drums); George Doody (sax, guitar). Back Row: Patsy Slattery (guitar); Joe Murphy (bass); Willie Slattery (vocals - RIP), David Allen (keyboards). Sandy Metcalfe tells us the band focused on covers and kept up with the top ten hits of the day. Although everyone in the band had day jobs (semi-professional) they travelled all across the midlands and southeast. In 1970, they released their one and only single, "Pain In My Heart" with "Massachusetts Baby" on the B-side. Both were written by lead singer Willie Slattery and although they were tempted to turn professional at the time, they kept their day jobs and played until 1972 at which point Sandy and David Allen formed the cabaret act, Cufflinks.
